Closure of Muirhouse Co-op leaves 22 jobs facing the axe

THE Co-operative Food Store in Muirhouse has confirmed it is to close next month amid “poor trading performance” with the loss of 22 jobs.

News of the closure has been met with “disappointment” from politicians and the Pennywell Road store’s final day of trading will take place on Saturday, December 29.

A spokesperson said: “Staff at the store have been informed of the decision, which has been taken with the greatest regret.

“Every effort will be made to redeploy as many as possible of the six full-time and 16 part-time members of staff, or to help them find alternative employment.”

Councillor Cammy Day, who represents the Forth Ward, said: “It’s disappointing. I’m a personal supporter of the Co-op but the most important factor is that they are doing everything they can to ensure the people who work there are being helped.”
