Colourist art breaks record

A WORLD record for a painting by Scottish artist Robert Gemmell Hutchison has been set at auction.

Sea Gulls and Sapphire Seas was sold for £120,000 at Bonhams Annual Scottish Sale in Edinburgh. It had been thought the picture could have fetched as much as £180,000.

It was painted in 1909 and is said to represent the artist at the height of his talent. Many of Hutchison’s most popular paintings feature children playing by the sea and he often used his daughters and their friends as models in coastal locations, including East Lothian.
