Convict struggling with long jail sentence attacked guard

A CONVICT attacked a prison guard because he couldn’t face serving a long sentence.

Scott Jarvie lunged at prison officer Ross McLeod and repeatedly tried to punch him on the head.

Livingston Sheriff Court was told that the punches failed to connect because other staff at Addiewell Prison, West Lothian, managed to restrain the violent inmate.

Jarvie, who has now been moved to Shotts Prison, Lanarkshire, was just one month into a six-year sentence for assault to severe injury.

Jarvie, 21, who earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting the officer on January 31, appeared for sentence yesterday.

Fiscal Deborah Demick said that for no apparent reason Jarvie took exception to the officer carrying out a numbers check.

Darryl Lovie, defending, said Jarvie had been struggling to cope with the prospect of being a long-term prisoner.

Adding four months to Jarvie’s current sentence, Sheriff Grahame Fleming told him: “The court must do all in its power to deter behaviour like this.”
