A 12-YEAR-OLD boy is among two people arrested and charged in connection with a serious assault that took place outside a shop in Dalkeith last month.

The victim, 27, was hospitalised after being set upon by a group of youths near the Scotmid store on Mayfield Place at teatime on Friday, October 30.

A major investigation was launched and police revealed yesterday that they had charged an 18-year-old man, who appeared before Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

A 12-year-old boy was also charged and has been reported to the Children’s Reporter.

Detectives said their probe into the “vicious” assault was continuing, however, as more people are suspected of being involved.

The victim was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after the incident, but was discharged after treatment.

Officers stepped up patrols in the Dalkeith area in a bid to reassure residents.

Anyone who has relevant information is asked to contact police immediately on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
