Driver who ploughed into tree gets road ban

A DUNBAR man who drove carelessly and ploughed his car into a tree has been banned from the road for 16 months.

Matthew Kay injured two passengers as well as himself when his vehicle left the roadway near to Thurston Mains, near Dunbar, last year.

Kay, of Randolph Crescent, drove at excessive speeds for the prevailing road conditions, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and enter a ditch before striking the tree.

The 20-year-old appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday where he received the road ban and a community payback order involving 90 hours of unpaid work.

Kay admitted to driving a vehicle carelessly, driving at excessive speeds and causing his vehicle to leave the road, enter a ditch and collide with a tree, injuring himself and two fellow passengers at Thurston Mains on August 24 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to driving with no insurance during the same incident and was admonished on the charge.

Pleas of not guilty to taking the vehicle without the owner’s consent, and to driving while unfit through drink or drugs on the same date were both accepted by the Crown.
