Police have urged businesses and members of the public to stay vigilant after fake £50 notes were used in Tesco and Aldi stores in North Berwick.

The counterfeit Bank of Ireland currency were given to staff at the shops by a suspect described as white, of large build with a ginger beard and between the ages of 30 and 39.

Inquiries to identify the man are ongoing.

In a statement released on social media on Tuesday, police have reminded the public and businesses to carefully check and examine any paper notes they receive to ensure that they are genuine.

The statement said: "If you are handed or suspect you are in possession of a counterfeit note, you should retain this and contact police immediately via 101.

"If you have any information which may assist with our enquiries please contact us 101 quoting incident number 1090 of 06/01/2020.

"Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
