Girl, 17, raped in early morning attack in Leith church grounds

A 17-year-old girl has been raped during an early morning attack within the grounds of a church in Leith.

Police Scotland are carrying out enquiries around the South Leith Parish Church on Constitution Street after reports of the serious sexual assault at 1am on Thursday.

It is understood that a police presence remains at the scene while officers work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a serious sexual assault involving a 17-year-old girl at around 1am on Thursday, October 22 in the grounds of a church in the Leith area of Edinburgh.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances around the incident.”

Last weekend in Leith, John’s Place and Wellington Place were sealed off by cops after a man died on a footpath.

Police Scotland confirmed they were called to the area at around 9.50am on Sunday following reports of a man being taken ill, who later died at the scene.
