Learner ‘to blame for fatal crash’

A LEARNER driver was responsible for “a catastrophic loss of control” in a car crash that killed his girlfriend, a court has heard.

Euan Tennant, 22, of York Place, denies causing the death of Laura Campbell, 22, by driving carelessly and at excessive speed. Fiscal depute Charmaine Cole told the jury at Perth Sheriff Court yesterday in her closing submission that the speed Tennant was driving at before the crash was the critical factor in Miss Campbell’s death.

She said: “The Crown case is that the driving of the accused was careless and that it was his carelessness that caused the collision. The Crown case is that the collision caused Laura Campbell’s death.”

Tennant previously told the court told how he regularly experienced “flashbacks” to the fatal accident, which took place on the A93 north of Perth on September 22, 2010. He told the jury that he thought about Miss Campbell every day and said he had “been going through hell” since her death.

He also denies losing control of the car and colliding with another vehicle, injuring its driver and his passenger.

The trial continues.
