A SERIAL paedophile who preyed on vulnerable children in care at a church-run home was warned he faced a lengthy jail sentence today

Ian Samson molested youngsters and raped one girl at the Edinburgh children’s home where he lived while his wife was the matron.

Samson, 72, continued his decades of abuse even after he severed links with the home and kept up his campaign of depravity targeting further youngsters in the community.

The pensioner appeared in the dock at the High Court in Edinburgh during a six-day trial with a cross around his neck as a string of his victims were forced to relive their ordeals as he denied a series of charges.

He was found guilty of a total of 22 charges by a jury today, including rape, indecency and assault involving 12 different victims. Eight of the crimes too place at the former children’s home between 1975 and 1981.

Samson, a prisoner in Glenochil jail, is a registered sex offender who has previously been jailed and has previous convictions for indecent exposure.

Samson, a former ice cream van operator, went on to run a shop in Goosegreen Road, in Musselburgh, and continued to perpetrate abuse.

The court heard children saw him viewing pornographic films at his former home in Coalgate Avenue, in Tranent, and abuse also occurred there.
