It read: “We want to say a huge thank you to all our special constables across Scotland - we have been humbled by your response during these testing times.

“Specials who give up their time to act as Police Scotland volunteers have pledged thousands of hours to support our response to the #coronavirus pandemic so far. Thanks to them and to their employers who have helped support them to be able to do this.

“Following news of the lockdown restrictions, a quarter of all our special constables immediately made contact to offer their support and increase their commitment, substantially in many cases.

“More than 40 employers have granted their employees leave in order to perform their Specials role.

“Over the past three weeks, around 140 Specials across more than 885 shifts have volunteered more than 7,500 hours.

“A number of specials have even offered to live away from home to fully commit to their role, and some who are already keyworkers in their full-time profession have offered to work additional hours for us.

“Thank you, from us all at Police Scotland.”
