Menzies, 55, from Gullane, East Lothian, punched the woman to the face, fracturing her cheekbone and eye socket, and causing nerve damage.

Ms Jamieson also had to undergo surgery to have a metal plate fitted to her face to help repair the damage.

Sheriff Donald Corke told Menzies - who served as a fire fighter for 30 years - that the attack had a “devastating impact” on his victim and he jailed him 16 months at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday. Previously, the court was told the pair had been drinking at the Golf Inn, Gullane, on the afternoon of May 14 last year and had headed back to the father-of-two’s home.

Menzies admitted to assaulting Ms Jamieson by punching her to the face whereby she fell to the ground to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement at Muirfield Terrace, Gullane, on May 14 last year.
