Rise in anti-social behaviour and youth crime sparks heavier police presence in East Lothian

Officers have increased in numbers in East Lothian following an increase in reports of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The spate of incidents have been happening in Prestonpans, Port Seton and Cockenzie where residents have complained about youth-related crime.

Residents have complained about young people vandalising buses, throwing items in the street and causing “general disorder”, according to police.

In response, Police Scotland has increased its presence in the region and officers are looking at CCTV in the area affected to try and trace those responsible for the crimes.

A police spokeswoman said: “Over the past few evenings we have had complaints regarding damage to buses from youths throwing items as well as general disorder. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“Local officers are reviewing CCTV and enquiry is ongoing to trace those responsible. East Lothian Council wardens and its CCTV van has been deployed to the area alongside police.

“If you see any disorder, please report it immediately on the normal numbers and if you know the name of the culprits or have a good description please let us know.

“If you are a parent or carer of a child and suspect they may be involved with these groups, please do all you can to prevent them meeting up.”
