The 17-year-old had filmed himself abusing the child but during the rape attempt was captured on video after the older girl set up her iPad in the room.

The older sister had become concerned by the youth’s behaviour and his obsession with her little sister, a court heard.

A judge told the youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, that he was deferring sentence on him to obtain a report from a psychologists.

Lord Burns said at the High Court in Edinburgh that the report would assess the level of risk he may pose and give a clearer idea of his psychological state.

After the sex attack was filmed, the older sister looked at the footage and showed it to her mother, who contacted police.

Mobile phones and a memory card were recovered from the jobless youth, from Edinburgh, which showed he had amassed a hoard of indecent images of children as well as filming himself with the little girl.

The court was told that pictures found on one phone showed very young children being sexually abused.

Advocate depute Paul Brown said explicit and graphic conversations through internet chat logs were also discovered in which the teenager described his sexual interest in the girl and boasted about his behaviour towards her.

A few weeks before the sex attack in Edinburgh a neighbour had seen the youth with the little girl at a back garden trampoline and shouted at him after seeing his hand between the child’s legs.

The rape attempt carried out on April 9 stopped after the teenager heard someone coming and the victim’s 12-year-old sister came into the room to get her iPad.

Mr Brown said the footage showed the attacker taking out his mobile phone and appeared to be recording what he was doing.

The youth appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in June last year and was released on bail with a condition that he provide mobile phones and tablets to police for inspection on request.

Officers saw him at Parliament Square on August 25 and asked to see his phone but he threw it against a wall and it landed in a basement.

The phone was recovered and analysed and found to contain three indecent images of children at the most serious level.

The youth earlier admitted sexually assaulting his victim when she was aged five and six, attempting to rape her, possessing child pornography, making indecent images of children, distributing an indecent image of a child and failing to comply with a bail condition.
