Dance Base steps up birthday celebrations with free classes

THE city’s national centre for dance is marking its tenth anniversary at its Grassmarket studios with free classes today.

Dance Base was officially opened by Prince Charles in 2001 and is celebrating its birthday by offering free classes in barefoot ballet, hip hop, contemporary and Irish dancing.

Classes, workshops, performances and professional development opportunities have been run by Dance Base in Edinburgh since 1994. The organisation was originally housed in a single studio in the Assembly Rooms. The building at 14-16 Grassmarket was one of the first major arts buildings developed with funds from the National Lottery. It was funded with £4,914,823 from the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery fund, with grants from the city council and Edinburgh World Heritage Trust.

Morag Deyes, artistic director said: “It doesn’t feel like a whole decade. Our beautiful home of dance is as fresh as the day we threw the doors open.”
