Darling backs calls for inquiry

FORMER Chancellor Alistair Darling today added his voice to calls for an immediate public inquiry into Edinburgh’s trams fiasco.

And he claimed Alex Salmond was trying to delay the investigation because he wanted to avoid criticism of the SNP ahead of next year’s local elections.

The Edinburgh South West MP said: “Alex Salmond’s refusal to sanction an inquiry now suggests to me what he is afraid of is the Nationalists’ role in running the council while all this was going wrong.

“But people are entitled to know what happened before they go to the polls, not afterwards.”
