Delve into archives at new centre

A NEW archive and museum in East Lothian has opened its doors to the public following a £7 million construction project.

The John Gray Centre in Haddington has seen the restoration of four historic buildings – a former pub, bank, hotel and grain store – into a state-of-the-art community facility.

Visitors can delve into East Lothian’s heritage or find resources, including images and maps, to help at school or in studies. There is also a lively community and outreach programme both at the centre and around the region.

The museum hosts exhibits from across the county and displays objects from its store which have been unseen for years.

Provost Sheena Richardson, who officially opened the centre’s Star Room, a community facility, said: “The John Gray Centre’s key location in the centre of Haddington is important for local communities and a central focus for visitors.

“It’s great to have a significant public building contributing to economic and social regeneration.”

The project was funded by East Lothian Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland.
