The St Johnstone ace, 29, has been told by police to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on the allegations on May 30, 2012.

He allegedly battered a pub bouncer during a night out earlier this week.

The ex-Celtic player was expected to appear at the court today but was released by police hours after being arrested on Sunday night.

Solicitors acting for Riordan gave Lothian and Borders Police and Edinburgh’s procurator fiscal an assurance that Riordan would appear in court at a later date.

Sources say Riordan was released from St Leonard’s Police station and made his way home hours after being detained.

It has been alleged that the dad of one was enjoying a night out with fellow players from the Perth based side in Edinburgh’s HMV Picture House Pub.

During the night out, Riordan is said to have hurled abuse at a doorman before grabbing him by the neck and assaulting him.

Sources say the police were called to the scene - and officers arrested Riordan shortly afterwards over the allegations.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman confirmed that Riordan would appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on May 30.

She added: “He was released on an undertaking and will appear in court at a later date.”
