A dog which bit off an East Lothian man’s genitals in a horrific attack is set to be put down.

Emergency services found a 22-year-old man unconscious and lying fully clothed in a pool of his own blood with an Olde English Bulldog, also covered in the man’s blood, at the same property in Haddington on Sunday, 7 October.

Police say the man was left with “significant injury to his groin” as a result of the attack.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and later transferred to the Western General where he was put into an induced coma.

The dog was subsequently seized by police.

Today, officers confirmed that the animal at the centre of the incident is to be put down.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland told the East Lothian Courier: “Inquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of how a 22-year-old man sustained significant injury to his groin area while within an address in Haddington on Sunday, October 7.

“However, as part of this investigation, the owner of the dog which is believed to have been involved has voluntarily signed documentation consenting to the destruction of the animal.”
