AN endurance athlete has admitted defeat in a 100-mile run he branded his “greatest challenge yet”.

Dr Andrew Murray had vowed to weather some of the world’s most hostile conditions to run the equivalent of four marathons in just 24 hours – from the Andes to the Amazon Basin.

But with 300m of Mount Cotopaxi to climb, a stomach bug and zero visibility forced him to turn back.

Writing on his blog after ending the challenge, Dr Murray said: “I will leave Ecuador frustrated but wiser.”
