Drivers queue for Capital petrol pumps

QUEUES formed at petrol stations in and around Edinburgh as motorists filled up their tanks ahead of the threatened tanker drivers’ strike.

Petrol sales have soared by 45 per cent and UK Government ministers were accused of encouraging people to panic buy.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude was criticised for suggesting drivers should fill up any spare jerry cans with petrol and keep them in garages.

The AA said it did not advocate drivers hoarding petrol at home or in their garages.

Prime Minister David Cameron denied he was trying to “raise the temperature” in the dispute but insisted there was “absolutely no justification” for a strike.

Queues were reported at the Shell garage at Dreghorn, near the city bypass, and at Tesco in South Queensferry.

Drivers could strike as early as Easter weekend in a row over safety standards and terms and conditions.
