A DRUNK who tried to rob a bookmakers at knifepoint was traced after he left his jacket behind.

George Whyte, 58, brandished the blade and told two workers at the William Hill branch in West Maitland Street: “You give me £200 or I am going to stab both of you.”

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that he fled when a manager refused to hand over cash and threatened to call the police.

But Whyte, of Caledonian Crescent, was caught on CCTV and identified after his jacket was forensically examined.

He earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting Douglas Sloan and David Gorrie and attempted robbery on September 15 last year and was yesterday ordered to carry out 225 hours of unpaid work in the community within 12 months.
