There was one child on the school coach who was left shaken by the incident but was unharmed, Police Scotland said.

The bus driver and a man who was a passenger in the van were both taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital and released after treatment.

Sergeant David Stenhouse, of the road policing unit at Motherwell, said: “The area would have been busy with rush-hour traffic around the time of the incident and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact officers on the 101 number.
