Easter ‘miracle’ of angel in steamy bathroom window

AS far as “miracle” apparitions go, it seems like a story which just doesn’t wash.

But an image of a praying angel (if you look hard enough) has been snapped on a steamed-up bathroom window, spookily overlooking a church on Easter Road – just after Easter.

The figure was spotted by sceptical Megan Blakemore, 25, after she stepped out from her morning shower yesterday.

The marketing assistant, who does not hold any religious beliefs, was so startled that she grabbed her camera before it vanished for good.

“I’m not a religious person at all so when I saw it this morning I had to do a couple of double-takes as I was the only person at home this weekend,” she said.

“I was having a shower and the bathroom window steamed up as it does every day.

“But when I got out of the shower I looked up at the window to see this image of an angel.

“I grabbed my camera and took some pictures to see if it would come out clearly on that.”

Ms Blakemore said she was still not sure what to make of the divine intervention at her Easter Road home, which overlooks London Road Church. But she insisted she was sure it was not a friend playing a prank.

“It’s was not there yesterday morning because I would have noticed it. Normally when you hear about things like this people are seeing images of Jesus on slices of toast or something and you almost have to be told what it is you are supposed to be seeing.

“But because this is very detailed I got in touch with my flatmate to see if she had been playing a trick on me but she’s been away since Friday.”

Ms Blakemore said she was still searching for “logical explanation” for the otherworldy goings-on.

“One of my colleagues said that pigeons flying into her windows often leave an impression but I don’t know if a pigeon could be responsible for that.”

But she added: “It’s a bit spooky and the longer the day goes on the more it is freaking me out. But I’m kinda thinking it could be my guardian angel.”

A spokesman for the Church of Scotland did agree to look at the image and while not suggesting it was anything other than condensation was happy to keep the mystery going.

He said: “As St Thomas Aquinas famously puts, “An angel can illuminate the thought and mind of man by strengthening the power of vision,” and as it says in the Book of Numbers, angels always appear unexpected.”

Appetite for apparitions

THE “miracle” of Easter Road is far from the first bizarre religious icon to appear in an unusual place.

In May 2009, the Allen family from Wales went public with the apparent face of Jesus on the lid of a jar of Marmite. Claire Allen, 36, was the first to notice the image on the underside of the lid.

Other examples of the phenomenon have seen the face of the Almighty appearing in a dental X-ray and a stained pizza pan while the Virgin Mary has been allegedly sighted in a pretzel.

But toast seems to be the snack of choice for immaculate perceptions, with several reports being made of divine figures making impromptu appearances.

In November 2004, it was reported that a half-eaten slice of ten-year-old cheese on toast depicting the image of the Virgin Mary attracted 100,000 hits on the eBay auction website. It eventually sold for $28,000.

It isn’t just the Christian faith that is graced with culinary iconography. In September 1999, hundreds of Muslims were reported to have flocked West Yorkshire to see a tomato which they believe carried a message from Allah.
