THIS year’s Fringe is on course to become one of the most popular ever, promoters have said.

Ticket sales last year were hit by a clash with the Olympics but venues are reporting strong sales so far this month – with some set for record-breaking numbers.

Underbelly said its Bristo Square site was far busier than last year and 22.5 per cent up on its five-year average.

The Assembly Rooms has been 30 per cent busier than last year and The Pleasance said it had experienced one of its busiest weekends on record.

Charlie Wood, co-director at Underbelly, said: “I have been involved with the Festival for the past 23 years and I would say the first ten days are the busiest I have ever seen – truly remarkable. Saturday was our busiest ever box office and the city is booming.”
