Edinburgh, Glasgow the worst for parking fines outside of London

Drivers in Scotland's two biggest cities are being hit with more parking fines than anywhere in the UK outside of London.

Wardens have slapped motorists in Edinburgh and Glasgow with £60 penalty charge notices 500 times a day on average.

Enforcement officers put 58,994 tickets on motorists’ vehicles in the Capital between July and September this year, amounting to 641 every day.

The slug accounted for more than half (65 per cent) of all fines issued in Scotland and generated revenue of more than £2.3 million.

George Street, known for its glamorous restaurants, shops and clubs, was the fine hotspot.

Glasgow came in third in the UK rankings.

Wardens issued 33,693 fines over the same period – 366 on average a day – to motorists in Glasgow.

The hotspot street for fines was the notoriously busy St Vincent Street located in the city centre.

The haul would potentially have earned Glasgow’s city council about £2 million.

In Scotland, the top five most ticketed areas were rounded out by Aberdeen, Fife and Dundee.

Officers dished out 10,170 tickets in Aberdeen across the three months to the end of September, while 5,698 and 4,910 were handed out in Fife and Dundee respectively.

London topped the UK rankings with 549,009 tickets issued.

The information was released as part of a Freedom of Information request.

Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “Providing and managing the space for us to park our cars is not a cost-free activity for councils, but controlling those costs is clearly important.”
