Edinburgh is Lady Boys spiritual home

THEY may have an exotic name but The Lady Boys of Bangkok actually began their journey much closer to home, right here in Edinburgh. Yes, the glamour of Hollywood and the glitz of Las Vegas first met the beloved traditions of classic British music hall right here in the Capital.

Now, as they uncork the Champagne and dress to kill nightly at the Sabai Pavilion at Fountainbridge, they’re celebrating 20 years of partying on the Fringe.

Creative Director, Phillip Gandey says, “The Lady Boys of Bangkok began its life at the Edinburgh Fringe. Never before had a company of Lady Boys performed a show in the western world so at first people were attracted by the sheer novelty.

“Two decades later and the Lady Boys of Bangkok is still the only show of its kind this side of Bangkok. But it no longer relies simply on novelty, it is a fantastic, non-stop spectacular theatrical experience. A complete entertainment specially created for a British audience.”

The 2018 Wonder Women Tour takes the cabaret to a new level with favourites from the last 20 years re-imagined, as well as new scenes, spectacular costumes, choreography and hilarious comedy.

Wonder Women features iconic ‘appearances’ by Cher, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Diana Ross, Pink, Shirley Bassey, even Wonder Woman herself as well as the ‘practically perfect in every way’ Mary Poppins... and let’s not forget the traditional rousing up-oan-yer-feet Scottish finale with the kilted Lady Boys proudly attired in their own tartan.

Performed by girls like no other girls, the show features 16 of Thailand’s most alluring and stunning Lady Boys - every one of them a male Thai national... apart from Trevor, a grumpy dwarf from Oldham.

Gandey adds, “From a one-off season on the Fringe the show now tours the UK continuously for almost eight months. It has become an unmissable date for thousands of people who form the heart of a very loyal audience supporting us year after year... looking forward to the event as their ‘big night out’.

“But the Edinburgh Fringe is a very special part of our lives. It’s the show’s spiritual home and our audiences here really know how to party and throw themselves wholeheartedly into the festivities.”
