Edinburgh beat London to remain at the top of the list compiled by the Telegraph from a poll of 75,000 people.

Of Edinburgh, the newspaper said: “The winner for the third year in a row. Why? From the history-soaked medieval tenements, vennels and wynds of the Old Town to the sweeping elegance of the Georgian New Town, Edinburgh deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful and compelling cities in the world.”

And we would struggle to disagree.
