Four pupils at Edinburgh Academy have been suspended and four others barred from the army cadet force after allegations that younger children were beaten by older students.

Rector Marco Longmore said it was “extremely regrettable” that the behaviour of a small number of pupils fell below the school’s standards.

A police inquiry is under way into claims that at least four cadets were put inside sleeping bags and whipped with wire coathangers while on a trip to Aberdeen.
