Rocking playgroup founders take their classes into prison

ONE of the Capital’s best-known playgroups is set to expand its services – into Saughton prison.

Dads Rock founders Thomas Lynch and David Marshall said they wanted to bring the group’s services to male inmates because it would help strengthen bonds between prisoners and their children, and may reduce reoffending.

The pair formed the Edinburgh childcare group 16 months ago to encourage men to take a more active role in parenting.

Now, after a funding application through the Robertson Trust and the Big Lottery Fund, they are to meet deputy governor Andy Hodge and operations director Derek McLeod to discuss proposals which could see Dads Rock take its services as often as once a week to HMP Edinburgh.

Mr Lynch said: “If fathers in prison had somewhere they could not only bond with their children, but do so in a supportive environment, then they would have a more positive experience of parenting.”
