AN elderly woman has lost a “significant” sum of money after being duped by scammers.

She received a phone call on Friday from a man, purporting to be from the Bank of Scotland, who told her that her account was “under attack”.

The woman, from West Lothian, agreed to transfer her funds to a different account after the man revealed specialist knowledge that gave her the impression the call was genuine.

She later discovered she had been the victim of fraud and called police, who are now investigating the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have received a number of reports of similar scams which can be very convincing. It has resulted in people losing large sums of money through this fraudulent activity.

“Victims tend to be elderly or vulnerable so we are asking people to be wary of anyone who calls claiming to be from their bank. Always check with your branch if you receive such a phone call.”
