TWO portraits showing the teenage Bonnie Prince Charlie and his younger brother, Prince Henry, are expected to fetch £30,000 at auction in Edinburgh today.
The oil paintings were completed around 1735 in the studio of Italian artist Antonio David, who painted for the Stuart court for many years.
Charles, around 14 years old, posed in full armour while his younger brother is wearing a breast plate under an elaborate jacket.
The 62x47cm portraits, which have been in a private collection, will be sold at Lyon & Turnbull, estimated at £20,000-£30,000.
Colin Fraser, Lyon & Turnbull’s specialist, said the canvases would have been painted not by David himself but under his supervision in his studio.
He said: “This striking pair of portraits depict the Princes Charles and Henry during their teenage years. David had been painting for the Stuart court for many years, and his work included creating childhood likenesses of the boys.”
