AN independent, family-owned brewery in the Capital has been hailed the best in the UK at the prestigious 2018 World Beer Awards.
The Edinburgh Beer Factory, based at Bankhead Industrial Estate, proved a serial winner at the recent awards winning two World’s Best Style Awards as well as the gong for the UK’s Best Helles Lager.
With these three wins to their name they were officially the highest performing UK brewery at this year’s awards.
Head brewer at the Edinburgh Beer Factory Martin Borland, says, “We’ve always taken an international perspective: looking all over the globe for brewing inspiration, and in turn, projecting the best of Modern Scotland back out at the world.
“Winning these awards for an eclectic range of beers is brilliant recognition of this.
“We’ll all enjoy a few of the award-winners this weekend.”
The winning beers in the Best Style category were Bunk! Edinburgh Brown, which secured the title World’s Best American Brown Ale for the second consecutive year.
“Bunk Edinburgh Brown was the brewery’s first experimental brew and the first in their new Bunk beer range inspired by the work of the great Leith artist, Eduardo Paolozzi.
The second brew to win, Bunk! Smoky Wheat, was awarded the title World’s Best Smoked Beer at its first attempt.
Released in Autumn 2017, this German-style wheat beer is the second beer in the Bunk beer range and is not only a nod to Paolozzi.
It is also inspired by the work of another artist who sought to blur the divide between high and low culture, and bring out ‘the sublime in the everyday,’ one David Bowie.
In his 1972 single Starman, Bowie sings about a ‘hazy cosmic jive’, which is how the Edinburgh Beer Factory describe Bunk! Smoky Wheat.
Finally, the full-bodied Paolozzi Lager, Edinburgh Beer Factory’s first ever brew, was named the UK’s Best Helles Lager for the third-year running.
