YOU may have seen her on television. When Tennessee-raised Chastity Brown appeared on Later…with Jools Holland back in September, it was generally agreed that she put on an impressive performance.
Later this month there’s a chance to spend an entire evening in the company of the Minneapolis-based soul-songstress when Brown kicks of her UK tour at The Pleasance Theatre on 15 January.
It’s part of this year’s Celtic Connections programme, and the singer couldn’t be happier to be heading back to Scotland.
“I’m so happy to be returning to the UK this January and it is an honour to be performing at the prestigious Celtic Connections festival,” she says.
“I absolutely love Scotland and am so excited to be kicking things off in Edinburgh, as I haven’t had the privilege of playing in the city before.”
Expect tracks from her critically acclaimed 2013 album, Back-Road Highways, the lead track of which, After You, was featured in the BBC/HBO film, Mary & Martha, starring Hilary Swank.
Blending gospel, roots and soul, jazz, blues and country, Brown’s songs have been described as being ‘born deep in the American bone’ to convey ‘the hunger, desperation and confidence that runs through our times.’
