MUSSELBURGH Amateur Musical Association (MAMAs) bring a little bit of Broadway and the West End to Musselburgh’s Brunton Theatre this week, when they appear in their first ever production of Guys And Dolls.

Guys and Dolls features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. The book is based on Damon Runyon’s tales of Broadway, and uses characters from across his work.

The original production in 1950 was one of the most successful shows of the decade, and numerous revivals have been mounted all over the world.

Spokesman Ali Macdougall says, “There is a real buzz among the company. We are really looking forward to putting on this well-loved musical.”

The story: All the hot gamblers are in town, and they’re all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up his notorious Floating Crap Game - the only problem is, he needs $1000 to get a venue.

In the meantime, Sarah Brown, who’s short on sinners at her mission, meets her match in high flying gambler Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan’s $1000 bet that he can’t get her to go with him to Havana.

Meanwhile, Miss Adelaide, who desperately wants Nathan to marry her, is performing her heart out at the nightclub at which she headlines.

McDougall adds, “There are lots of fun numbers that we can really go to town with.”

Show-stopping numbers, many of them made famous by the incomparable Frank Sinatra, include Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat, Luck Be A Lady and, of course, Guys And Dolls.

This year’s production stars many of MAMA’s familiar faces as well as some new local talent.

Now in their 64th year, MAMA have more than 70 acting and non-acting members, ranging in age from eight to 80. Over the decades the company has put on a vast selection of musical productions, however this is the first time they have tackled Guys & Dolls.

Will Miss Adelaide and Miss Sarah get their men? Will the gamblers win some dough? Come along to Brunton Theatre and find out. One thing’s for sure, you’ll be tapping your feet in the aisles, and humming the tunes all the way home.

Guys And Dolls, Brunton, Musselburgh, until Saturday, 7.30pm (matinees 2pm), £13-£15, 0131-665 2240
