EDINBURGH amateur dramatic club St Serf’s Players, celebrate their 65th anniversary this year with a production of Tony Roper’s classic, bitter-sweet comedy, The Steamie.

Started in 1948 by members of St Serf’s church, the club staged their first productions in February 1949 - three one-act plays, The Ugly Duckling, In Waltz Time and John Grumlie.

In 1983, St Serf’s Players staged their first Pantomime, Cinderella, the start of an annual tradition that continues to this day.

Right now though, all their focus is on The Steamie, which runs at the St Serf’s Church Hall, off Ferry road, until tomorrow.

“St Serf’s have had great fun putting this production together. We wanted to do the Steamie but also make it our own, so we decided to do the music and also have a chorus of Steamie workers to create the atmosphere of a busy wash house,” says director Philip Wilson.

“It has been a challenging play to put on , but also very rewarding. Like the characters in the play we have laughed, cried and had great fun in rehearsals.

“The cast have worked very hard to bring this play together for our 65th anniversary production.”

The Politician’s Husband finds David Tennant and Emily Watson starring as husband and wife team senior cabinet minister Aiden Hoynes (Tennant) and Freya Gardner (Watson), a junior minister.

When we meet Aiden he is a rising star in Westminster. He went into Parliament driven by idealism, but after his son Noah was diagnosed with Aspergers he allowed himself to be sucked into the power games of Westminster, which provided him with a place to hide.

Freya, although equally able, has put the brakes on her own political career in order to provide stability for the family. But even as a junior Minister, most recognize she is a political star in the making.

A bookend to the multi award- winning The Politician’s Wife, The Politician’s Husband follows the shifting balance of power in a political marriage and the ensuing consequences when a wife becomes more successful than her husband.
