ROLL up! Roll up! The circus is back in town, and not just any old circus, but the internationally acclaimed Chinese State Circus, complete with exciting new production, Dynasty.

Breathtaking in its simplicity, Dynasty rewinds to the creative roots of circus, projecting the age-old skills into a contemporary setting.

It’s a showcase of an art form that has thrilled audiences for more than 2,000 years, in which low-tech everyday objects are transformed into hi-tech acrobatic equipment.

In their fully-heated Big Top, erected in the grounds of Meadowbank Stadium (head for the car park), everything from a bicycle to delicate Chinese sun-parasols, farmers’ straw hats to earthenware pots on cords become items to thrill and amaze.

And all the old circus favourites are there too; stunning world class acrobats, aerial artistes, hoop divers, jugglers, cyclists as well as the masters of martial arts, the legendary Shaolin Warriors.

Conceived 25 years ago by Carol and Phillip Gandey, the latter became the first Circus Director in Europe to obtain permission from the Chinese Cultural authorities to be allowed to tour a Big Top production of his own creation performed entirely by Chinese acrobats.

Gandey has spent a considerable time travelling throughout China selecting the very best circus artistes to continue the acrobatic excellence of the Chinese State Circus tradition.

He says, “In our latest production we’ve returned to the pure and honest perfection in acrobatics.

“In Dynasty we have created a show with no gimmicks, no fakes, no retakes, quite simply, the incomparable Chinese State Circus.”
