FARM animals were rescued from a blazing barn when 100 tonnes of baled straw caught fire at a Dalkeith farm.

The incident at Langside Farm began shortly before 1pm and was brought under control just after 5pm.

Firefighters from Dalkeith, Musselburgh, Marionville, Liberton, Tranent, McDonald Road and Crewe Toll fire stations were called to tackle the blaze.

On arrival, crews discovered 100 tonnes of baled straw alight in a barn which also contained animals.

Firefighters had to deal with the additional hazards of a nearby shed containing fertiliser and high-voltage power lines.

It is understood that ScottishPower assisted the fire service by isolating power cables at the farm.

A Fire Service spokesman said: “The animals were evacuated to safety, however there were concerns about an adjacent shed which contained fertiliser. We had to make sure that it didn’t come into contact with the fire.”
