Fines for use of bus lanes

DRIVERS in the Capital caught using bus lanes will be fined up to £60 under new rules which come into force today.

The crackdown comes after the Scottish Government decriminalised enforcement in February, giving the city council power to fine motorists who use the lanes during operational hours.

Closed circuit cameras have already been installed on ten key bus routes in the city.

The cameras record the number plates of anyone using the lanes, with computers checking them against a list of exempt vehicles such as buses, taxis, bicycles and community transport.

Councillors said residents had been informed of the regulations by an advertising campaign and added that warning letters had been sent to drivers caught flouting the rules.
