Crews from Liberton and New Craighall were called into action this morning after the powerful animal, named Kyle, was discovered “wedged” within one of the stable access gates at Wester Melville Farm, near Lasswade.

They were at work with a range of equipment, including slings and a Moffett Mounty forklift, in a bid to release the horse, which was discovered stuck after falling over during the night.

Kyle was kept sedated during the rescue operation and eventually released just before 11.15am, with firefighters remaining in attendance until it was clear he could stand unaided.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “The horse was suffering from minor cuts and was tired - he had obviously been through a bit of a trauma.”
