First Lego League: Leith girls set sights on London finals

A TEAM of primary school girls has fended off competition from their male classmates and a host of older pupils to grab the top spot in a Lego robot-building competition.

The girls, from Leith Primary, scooped £1000 and a trophy after winning the First Lego League’s Edinburgh Regional Tournament.

They will now use the prize winnings to assist them in attending the UK finals of the competition, set to take place in Loughborough on February 21.

The triumphant team was made up of one girl from primary seven, two from primary six and two from primary five.

Saturday’s challenge saw the youngsters score consistently highly across all four elements of the competition – the most high-profile of which was to design and programme a Lego robot to perform a series of increasingly complex missions.

They fended off 18 other teams to grab the trophy, including children from local high schools and a team of boys from their own school.

Headteacher Alasdair Friend said the result helped boost girls’ achievements in science, tech, engineering and maths.
