A GAMBLING addict who conned a 96-year old woman into giving him her bank card and PIN number blew £600 playing a roulette machine in a bookies’ shop.

William Williamson, 28, told his victim at her house in Portobello that he would cut down a tree which was “damaging” her property.

He then asked her for payment, but after telling him she didn’t have any cash, she handed over her bank card and PIN. Williamson, a prisoner in Saughton, said he would be back in five minutes, but never returned.

He pleaded guilty to committing three charges of fraud and one of theft on December 22 last year and was yesterday jailed for 12 months at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Donald Corke said: “This was a particularly nasty fraud, taking advantage of a 96-year-old woman.”
