Gun victim’s brother jailed for assault

THE brother of a businessman who was hurt in a mysterious shooting has been jailed for assaulting a stranger in the street.

Peter Kelbie, 34, was locked up for 25 months for attacking defenceless Robert Gray in St John’s Road in August 2011.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday heard how the thug was extremely drunk when he struck Mr Gray outside a kebab shop. When Mr Gray asked Kelbie why he attacked him, the thug responded: “Cos you were there.”

Kelbie, of Glasgow Road, is the sibling of Robert Kelbie, who was shot in the car park of Bannatyne’s Health Club in Newcraighall in October 2010.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Sentencing Kelbie for the attack and aggravating bail, Sheriff John Horsburgh QC said: “The charge to which you have pleaded guilty is a serious one. I am of the opinion that the most appropriate disposal is to impose a custodial disposal.”

Former boxer Robert Kelbie pleaded guilty to mortgage fraud earlier this month at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and will be sentenced next month.
