A SUPPORT scheme to help new mums to breastfeed has celebrated its tenth birthday.
The Best Buddies initiative aims to provide support for new mothers in areas of the Capital where breastfeeding rates are at their lowest.
Volunteers are trained by infant feeding advisers, who then offer to visit new mums in their homes over six weeks.
The scheme has proved such a hit that it has since been extended across the Lothians.
Mealanie Mills, who trained as a buddy in 2010, said: “It’s so rewarding to support new parents in their first few weeks especially. I breastfed both my daughters and I wish that the best buddies were around then.
“I feel very privileged to be able to use my experience and knowledge to support a mum in one of the most special times in her life. There is no better feeling than watching a mum build in confidence.”
