Levein, who lives in Fife, was treated by staff at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary’s coronary care unit and released a few days later to recover at home.

Last week he took to Twitter to tweet for the first time in more than two years to “thank the paramedics and all staff in the CCU at ERI for their care and professionalism” and “the professional footballing family for their amazing support, it’s been overwhelming. Huge respect and gratitude to the Hearts supporters and those of other clubs (including our friends across the city )who have taken time to wish me well”.

This week he dropped in on the Dunfermline unit of the Scottish Ambulance Service to pay tribute to the people who helped him on when he fell ill having tracked down those who came to his aid.

David Burt was one of those from the ambulance service who assisted Levein and he posted a picture on Twitter with the Hearts boss, who is looking in good health, with the message “thank you so much for coming in and letting me know your feeling better”.

Levein, who has led Hearts to the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership, picked the team for Saturday’s 4-1 victory over St Mirren where fans paid tribute to their manager with applause, songs and a banner wishing him well in his recovery. He hopes to be back in the dug-out for the club’s next fixture, away to Motherwell on 15 September.
