REFURBISHMENT work at Edinburgh Castle has helped Historic Scotland record an all-time high in membership numbers.

A total of 125,702 people have signed up as members of the national conservation body, an increase of 8.8 per cent in comparison with the same time last year.

Stephen Duncan, Historic Scotland’s director of commercial and tourism, said: “Edinburgh Castle has recently refurbished St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh, the Tea Room and its retail outlets.

“In addition, the stories that make the history of Scotland’s number one paid-for visitor attraction so fascinating have been re-written to produce colourful and dramatic illustrations reconstructing some of the tempestuous events that helped shape the nation.”
