Homophobic assault in city was ‘totally unprovoked’

POLICE say that a homophobic attack by a gang in the city centre was “totally unprovoked”.

A 20-year-old man left the GHQ nightclub in Picardy Place and was walking to get a taxi in Broughton Street at around 2.30am on Saturday when he passed a group of around four men and one woman.

One of the group made homophobic remarks to the victim before one of the men punched him, knocking him to the ground.

The victim was later treated for a fractured jaw.
