Hundreds to ‘occupy’ city

MORE than 200 people have signed up to attend a protest in Edinburgh over the weekend about government cuts.

The Occupy Edinburgh event is based on a similar movement in the United States, which saw people enter the financial districts of cities and stage sit-ins at banks and businesses.

The Coalition of Resistance has vowed to create a similar spectacle in St Andrew Square from 1pm on Saturday. It intends to target the nearby Royal Bank of Scotland and is laying on buses from Glasgow.

A spokesman said: “There will be a Scotland-wide mobilisation in the heart of the Edinburgh financial district.

“We want to send a message that Scotland is part of the global anti-austerity movement and that our banks are more complicit than most in the failure of the financial system.”
