Jesus and Mary Chain and Mogwai light up Leith

HOT on the heels of Hidden Door, another Festival sees Leith Theatre once again transformed into a music venue as the International Festival relocates its popular music programme there. The first time the EIF have graced the historic theatre in three decades.

No fewer than 16 events make up the three week run in the venue that has played host to the likes of Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Kraftwerk, Slade, John Martyn and Mott the Hoople in the past.

This time around it’s the turn of acts such as Mogwai, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Django Django and Alan Cumming to entertain as part of the EIF’s Light on the Shore programme.

A 25-strong technical team has been rewiring and stabalising the venue since February in order for it to host the concerts which include one by The Jesus and Mary Chain tonight.

The concert series is described by the EIF as “a journey through the highways, byways and back lanes of Scottish music...” celebrating “Scotland’s musical impact around the world and recognising visitors who have left an indelible mark.”

Hailing from East Kilbride, The Jesus and Mary Chain certainly fit the bill. They shaped an era-defining fuzzy, shoegazey sound with their blissed-out Psychocandy in 1985, and toured it again on the album’s 30th anniversary.

They are supported by slacker-rock duo Honeyblood with their distorted guitars and woozy harmonies, and the pastoral indie folk of Spinning Coin.

Another highlight of the series find Mogwai coming to Leith for two nights, 22 and 23 August, when the post-rock turned arena-rock gods celebrate more than 20 years in the business.

Mogwai round up their worldwide tour with these two special Scottish performances.
