A 1994 landscape by an Edinburgh painter has sold for more than £7 million at auction.
Peter Doig’s Jetty, which featured in his solo debut on New York, sold at Christie’s in London for £7,341,875.
The work, which sold on Tuesday evening, was expected to go for between £4m and £6m.
The 2.5m-wide work was bought by a mystery buyer shortly after Doig’s solo debut, in which he loaded it into a truck and drove it from Toronto, where he was living, to Manhattan.
After it sold, it disappeared from view before turning up on a Tate Britain retrospective in 2008.
Jetty is inspired by Doig’s years living in Canada, where he moved at seven years old, and sees him turn the landscape in to a dreamy vision.
