ARTIST John Bellany’s widow has revealed she covered him with the Lion Rampant after he passed away at their home.
The East Lothian-born painter was living near Saffron Walden, Essex, but his widow Helen said his heart was always in Scotland.
She said his death last week had been “very peaceful”. She said: “He used to watch football with his sons. They had just watched the England v Scotland game, the flags were all around him, he was decked out.
“When he died, I just caught sight of one of the flags and covered his bed with the Lion Rampant.”
His body will rest overnight in Chalmers Memorial Church, Port Seton, before his funeral at St Giles Cathedral on Tuesday. The cortege is due to drive past Port Seton harbour – the inspiration for many of his paintings – on its way.
